On October 25, 2022, Apple called on its global supply chain to take new steps to address its greenhouse gas emissions by expanding investments in clean energy and climate solutions around the world. Historically, Apple has powered its global corporate operations with 100% renewable energy since 2018 and has also been carbon neutral for its global operations since 2020. Now, Apple's next goal is to become carbon neutral across its entire global supply chain and the life cycle of every product. Not only is Apple one of the leading companies in innovation and technology, but they are now also role models to other companies and corporations who truly care about accelerating the world's transition to renewable energy.
The company will evaluate the work of its major manufacturing partners to decarbonize its Apple-related operations and products. One of these operations is running on 100% renewable electricity and will also track its yearly progress. The three main goals the company will intent to implement across its global supply chain by 2030 are:
200+ suppliers committed to using clean energy like wind or solar for their apple production
3,000 GWh of renewable energy across Europe per year by 2030 to address the electricity used by apple devices on the continent
1 million metric tons of carbon forecast to be removed in 2025 through Apple’s Restore Fund
Furthermore, they will be partnering with suppliers working with urgency while cutting ties with suppliers who aren’t making measurable progress toward decarbonization. To help ensure their supplier's commitments and go even further than only addressing Apple-related emissions, Apple will be offering free e-learning resources and live training through its Clean Energy Program and work closely with local partners to identify effective solutions for carbon removal.
Over the next several years, the company aims to procure enough renewable energy to power all Apple devices on the continent with low-carbon electricity, while continuing to power corporate offices, retail stores, and data centers with 100 percent clean energy. Customers in the United States can now play a role in decreasing the carbon footprint of iPhone with Clean Energy Charging. Available starting this month in the United States through iOS 16, the new feature looks at the sources of the electricity during expected charge times and optimizes for when the grid is using cleaner energy sources like solar or wind.
